These creators are the benchmark for the research-backed app design niche, and this page exists because we admire them. We pulled complete transcripts of nine of their videos and took notes on structure, pacing, sourcing, and visual technique — the respectful version of a teardown.

A UX education channel built on psychology explainers. The video in our set turns six behavioral effects into before/after screens so concrete you could ship them — the purest teaching format of the three, powered by fictional mockups and famous-app proof shots.

One template, six times, zero drift.

Every principle runs the identical six-beat sequence: bad screen, name the pain, cite the effect, fixed screen, one-line rule, famous-app proof (LinkedIn, Duolingo, Costco, Spotify, Notion). Bridges between sections are explicit contrasts, so there are no dead transitions anywhere.

The fixes are sold through tiny concrete changes: button copy shifts from "Search" to "12 results waiting" and from "Maybe later" to "I'll risk it"; fields arrive pre-filled; progress bars start at 20% instead of 0%. Abstract psychology becomes a diff you can see.

Two mid-roll promos (Mobbin, the UX Peak Plus course) are woven in as part of the workflow rather than bolted on. Claims lean on named effects: the Columbia jam study (24 flavors, 3% bought; 6 flavors, 30%), loss aversion, reciprocity, the IKEA effect.

Standout techniques: the before/after mockup as the entire visual engine, and real-app cameos as proof shots — LinkedIn's profile meter, Duolingo's pre-signup lesson. The weakness our notes flag: nearly every number is uncited or misattributed, and fictional mockups mean no evidence any redesign actually converted.

Tim Gabe

A product designer — a decade across Big Tech and startups, per his own credibility beat — who runs a design agency and publishes the tightest teaching structures in the niche. Four of our nine videos are his: onboarding, gamification, paywalls, and personalization.

Rule, hero case, counterexample, earned principle.

His onboarding video frames the problem, shows Granola winning with a 2-screen onboarding, then deliberately breaks its own rule — Cal AI's 20+ step quiz, Noom's 113 screens — before synthesizing when long onboarding is justified. Giving the exception equal weight makes the rule feel earned rather than dogmatic. The strongest teaching arc in the whole set.

The gamification video teases its Apple material in the hook and delivers it as pattern six, roughly eight minutes later. The paywalls video hangs entirely on its hook stat — top apps earn 18.7x more — held open and resolved as the final pattern. One loop per video, always closed.

How To Solve The App Onboarding Paradox

Structure: cold-opens on the scary stat — apps lose 77% of users within 3 days — promises the contents explicitly, then runs hero case (Granola, 2 screens), deliberate contradiction (Cal AI, Noom), and the resolution rule: shortest possible onboarding, unless length buys personalization or filters for buyers.

Standout: a complete argument in five minutes — one rule, two cases, one exception — with screen recordings of the real flows doing the visual work.

I Studied 500+ Gamified Apps (Here's What Actually Works)

Structure: seven "research-backed patterns" alternating failure case with counterexample — points-badges-leaderboards as documented failures, then Strava segments, Habitica's S-curve problem, the streak trap, variable reward, Apple Watch rings as the teased payoff, and competence signals over badge theater.

Standout: the best structural craft in the set — but also the home of the unsourced 49.5% Apple Watch centerpiece (more below).

I Studied 10,000 Paywall Screens (THIS Makes People Pay)

Structure: six patterns, each ending in a bridge question into the next; the 18.7x hook stat is resolved as the final pattern — the gap is testing velocity, 50+ paywall experiments a year versus one.

Standout: his best-cited video. RevenueCat and Adapty are named repeatedly — 82% (RevenueCat) and 89.4% (Adapty) of trial starts happen on install day — and the sourcing visibly upgrades how legitimate the data feels.

The Twisted Psychology Behind Top 1% Apps

Structure: three chapters — The Mirror, The Label, The Flex — each pairing one app with one mechanism: Starcrossed with the Barnum effect, 16 Personalities with identity adoption, Airbuds with the share-loop-as-referral-loop. The escalation is explicit: mirror works once, label retains, flex acquires.

Standout: his best-sourced psychology — Forer's 1948 experiment and Aronson & Mills 1959 named with dates — and a full app teardown, loader states and paywalled reveal included, used as narrative.

The design-reference platform's own channel — and the only one in the set with a genuine data moat. Every essay is framed around first-party numbers from the Mobbin library, delivered with documentary craft and an honesty register the listicle format can't reach. Four of our nine videos are theirs.

The paywalls video cold-opens on a montage of expert soundbites contradicting best practices, then interlaces the narrator's research across 2,995 paywalls with interview clips from a designer of 4,700+ paywalls. Two voices — essay plus practitioner — is unique in this set.

Numbers only Mobbin could publish: the average app has 25 onboarding screens; roughly 1 in 5 products on Mobbin use a dashboard as the home screen; AI dashboards get about 2x the saves of average dashboard screens. Nobody else in the niche can make these claims.

The streaks video asks whether its own subject is good for users. The paywall expert flags what he hasn't tested yet on camera. The paywalls close reframes the entire topic toward making something worth paying for. Our notes call these the most credible moments in all nine videos.

Structure: paywall-as-flow, risk reduction, friction as a filter, framing, pricing and packaging, polish, then the dark patterns the expert distrusts — closing on a philosophical reframe and a parting fun fact: fewer than 5 screens to subscribe to ClassPass, 17 to cancel.

Standout: the expert critiques real paywalls on screen, element by element, and openly flags his own uncertainty — which reads as more credible than any stat in the niche.

I Studied 2,108 Dashboards To See What Sticks

Structure: a five-minute essay — insight next to the chart, earned visual distinctiveness, dashboards as sales assets, invented metrics as lock-in — with a horse-carriage etymology digression as the midpoint attention reset.

Standout: ends on a repeatable mental tool instead of a recap — the screenshot test: the dashboards worth keeping are the ones that knew what to leave out.

The Psychology Behind Streaks

Structure: a first-person confession hook — the streak started mattering more than the learning — then four mechanisms (fear, optimism, attachment, visual pattern), a dopamine-prediction deepening via Professor Schultz, and the design answer: forgiveness beats strictness. Built on a review of 859 streak designs.

Standout: the only video of the nine that interrogates its own topic — engagement or habit formation? — and a genuinely vulnerable close about coming back after breaking the chain.

I Studied 1,460 Onboarding Flows. Here's What I Found.

Structure: data-versus-conventional-wisdom framing from sentence two — everyone says keep it short, yet the average app runs 25 onboarding screens. Dataset stats up front (23% of apps personalize, AI apps only 7%; 22% of 900+ apps paywall during onboarding), then a pattern tour ending on whether onboarding is needed at all. Duolingo: roughly 60 screens before account creation.

Standout: 25+ named apps in ten minutes, curated for distinctive detail — a handwritten founder's note, a flight-ticket paywall with haptic printing. Memorable specifics over categories.

The synthesis

The craft patterns worth stealing

Across all nine transcripts, the same structural machinery keeps appearing. This is the part we copy without hesitation.

The four-beat segment

Every strong segment runs the same spine: claim, named real app, number, one-line portable takeaway. Bridges between sections are always explicit questions or contrasts — there is not one dead transition in roughly ninety minutes of footage.

The teased payoff

Plant one open loop in the hook, hold it, pay it off near the end. Tim Gabe teases the Apple Watch pattern in his first sentence and delivers it eight minutes later; his paywalls video hangs on the 18.7x gap resolved as the final pattern. One loop per video — never more.

Mockups vs montages

Two visual engines dominate. UXPeak's fictional before/after screens buy maximum clarity — you see the exact button copy change — but prove nothing converted. Mobbin's real-app montages buy credibility at the cost of depth. The unclaimed high ground: before/afters from real shipped redesigns with measured results.

The smaller moves

Coin names for your patterns — "the PBL fallacy," "the streak trap," "the mirror / the label / the flex" — cheap to make, durable in memory. Schedule one attention reset per video near the midpoint: a history digression, a Tamagotchi segment, a self-aware joke. Keep runtime discipline: 5-minute single-rule videos or 10–12 minute pattern videos, nothing over 13. Weave CTAs into the content instead of bolting them on, and cross-promote episodes as a series — binge behavior compounds.

Where the citations fall apart

This is said with full respect — these videos are the benchmark, and the notes above exist because we study them. But the transcripts document a systemic weakness: almost every quantitative claim across the nine videos is unsourced, vaguely sourced, or misattributed. Naming it plainly matters, because it is exactly the gap LAUNCHED is built to close.

The 77% that never gets a source.

The anchor stat of Tim Gabe's onboarding video — apps lose 77% of users within 3 days — is the roughly 2015 Quettra/Andrew Chen figure, presented as current with no source named. It carries the entire cold open of the video.

"Up to 2,000%," attributed to no one.

UXPeak's claim that free samples increase purchases by up to 2,000% has no source at all. The same video attributes the car-wash loyalty-card study to researchers at Columbia — it is Nunes & Drèze 2006 — and states that 70–90% of users never change default values, also uncited.

The most dramatic number in the gamification video — Apple Watch driving 49.5% behavior change in 160,000 people — is never tied to a named study. Around it sits citation-costume phrasing: "a 2022 ScienceDirect study," "the 2024 Springer Nature meta-analysis" — journal hosts without authors or titles, untraceable.

Cal AI, told two contradictory ways.

In the onboarding video, Cal AI runs a 20+ step quiz; in the paywalls video, it is a 28-screen onboarding. Same app, same channel, different numbers — and the $35M first-year revenue figure is uncited both times. Consistency across your own episodes is part of credibility.

Blinkist's trial-timeline redesign appears in both Tim Gabe's and Mobbin's paywall videos — neither credits the public case study behind it. Mobbin's streaks video uses Duolingo's +0.38% DAU streak-freeze result (about 200k more daily learners) and a months-long habit study that is plainly Lally et al. 2009, both without attribution — exactly the studies a research-backed series should name on screen.
